2024 Volkswagen Safety Innovations

IQ.DRIVE is an innovative suite of safety systems that help protect you and your passengers. Its various systems warn of potential dangers and can actively intervene when required to prevent an accident. We’re going to look at some of these VW safety features and see how they operate.

VW Safety Features That Protect You on the Road

Travel Assist

This feature helps reduce driver strain by providing steering, braking, and acceleration when you need it. You can set the following distance, and the system uses radar and a camera to identify a vehicle ahead and its distance from our bumper. If the vehicle brakes, your VW will reduce speed to maintain its programmed safe distance.

Travel Assist detects the lane lines using a camera, then controls steering to keep you centered until you intervene. It’s also able to apply emergency braking if needed to prevent a collision and will intervene if something happens and you’re unable to control your vehicle. The system will bring you to a controlled stop and contact emergency services for you.

Active Blind Spot Monitor

This system uses sensors to scan the sides and rear of your VW and watch for vehicles. These areas are blind spots you can’t easily watch, making them potentially dangerous, especially during lane changes. If a vehicle is detected, you receive visual and audio warnings.

When you activate a direction indicator, this feature instantly warns you if another vehicle is present in that lane. This allows you to brake or take other action to avoid a collision. If you don’t react fast enough, this feature counter-steers to turn your VW back toward your lane center. If required, it can also engage emergency braking.

Lane Assist

It’s relatively easy to stray across the lane lines, particularly if you’re tired or distracted. Unfortunately, this can cause an accident if a vehicle is already in that lane. This feature uses a camera to identify the lane line markings. Once identified, you’ll receive warnings if your wheels are about to cross into a neighboring lane and you’re not actively steering.

The system will counter-steer to bring you back into your lane and away from danger. It’s automatically active at speeds above 35 mph.

Rear Traffic Alert

Sensors located in your VW’s rear watch the area directly behind you and to the left and right. They can detect approaching vehicles that will pass behind you. You’ll hear a warning chime and an indicator will appear on your screen to identify the vehicle’s direction. This enables you to brake quickly and prevent a collision. The system can also hit the brakes for you if you don’t respond fast enough.
