Why Volkswagen Oil Changes Matter

Why Volkswagen Oil Changes Matter: Longevity and Efficiency

Is it time for an oil change from your VW dealer? What exactly does changing out the oil do for your engine? It makes a big difference both to the efficiency and longevity of your Volkswagen, and we'd like to explain why. Why an Oil Change From Your VW Dealer Matters What Oil Does Oil is a simple thing and really quite old technology when it comes to the combustion engine, but the reason we still use it is because there's nothing better. Your engine is a very hot, wild environment where metal is moving constantly. All the parts in your engine need to be protected, and that's what oil does. Oil provides a thin sheen of lubrication that stops the metal from grinding on metal. But that's not all your oil does to protect the engine. Engines are also hot, and while your coolant system is the main component designed to deal with that heat, oil actually also removes heat as it passes through the engine. And as it's passing through, oil picks up all the microscopic metal shavings that are generated by the explosions and movement in the engine as well as the dirt and grime that naturally get in there from the outside. Finally, oil provides rust protection and some protection against corrosion from road salt and chemicals (particularly modern synthetic oils). more How Oil Changes Help When you get your oil changed, you also get your oil filter changed. The filter removes all of those metal shavings and bits of dust that we mentioned above from the oil, but as time goes along, that oil filter fills up. As it does, the oil itself has more and more crud in it and can't do its job as effectively. The constant heat to which the oil is exposed slowly begins to break down even the hardiest of synthetic oils, and once it begins to break down, it can't cool and protect your engine the way it's supposed to. Oil changes keep fresh oil running through your engine at all times. This keeps your engine from running too hot and also keeps it clean and protected. When your engine runs hot, you burn more gas, so regular oil changes increase your efficiency. When your engine runs hot or when it's not well protected, it's simply harder on the engine in general. The more frequently you go for extended periods without changing the oil after you should, the more strain you put on the engine and the shorter its life will be, all other things being equal. Oil does a lot to protect your engine, so if it's time for your Volkswagen to get service, schedule service with us at Ewald Volkswagen of Menomonee Falls, WI today.

Volkswagen Battery Replacement

Signs Your Volkswagen Battery May Need Replacement

A dead battery is a major headache for any driver, and it will always seem to happen at the worst possible time. A battery usually shows warning signs that something is wrong, giving you enough time to replace it at your VW dealer.  We'd like you to know a few signs you may need to visit us for a new car battery. Signs You Need a New Car Battery From Your VW Dealer Dim Lights Dim lights could mean your headlight bulbs are worn, but could also mean your battery is weak. The average lifespan for a battery is three to five years, although this can be reduced due to environmental factors or electrical system issues. You can easily test your battery strength by checking headlight brightness when your engine is switched on, then repeating the test with your engine switched off. If the headlights are equally dim in both situations, your battery is fine.  If the headlights are brighter when the engine is running, your battery is weak and needs to be tested. We'll connect your battery to our computerized battery tester. This machine can determine if your battery is still strong or on its way to failing. We can install a new battery in minutes, if needed, to fix this problem. more Swollen Battery Case Extreme heat or cold can cause serious battery damage relatively quickly. A battery contains sulfuric acid, copper plates, an electrolyte solution, and other components that enable it to store and supply electricity. If you look at your battery and the case appears warped or distorted, your battery is failing due to extreme weather. Drastic temperature affects the electrolyte consistency. If the temperature is too high, the electrolyte can boil off. This causes the copper plates to buckle and wreck the battery. The internal pressure created by the burning distorts the case. Very low temperatures freeze the electrolyte, increasing its size and forcing the battery case outward. We can't repair this type of damage, but we can install a new battery for you. Damaged Alternator The battery uses a large amount of its stored electricity to start your engine. Once your engine is running, a mini generator called the alternator begins recharging the battery. A healthy alternator recharges the battery at full power for ten minutes, then switches to recharging at 10% power until the battery is charged. A damaged alternator might not switch to reduced charging and will continue to charge at full power. This causes the battery to overheat, and the electrolyte will boil. If this happens, you smell a strong chemical smell from under the hood. We'll replace the damaged alternator and test your battery to ensure it's still in good condition.
